The Value and Evolution of a Story

This year, USFSM, the joint Children’s Literature Symposium and the Florida Association of Teacher Educators brings together presentations from educators, scholars, critics, librarians and graduate students that address shifts and developments in traditional genres of literature, explore new and emerging genres in children’s and adolescent literature, and the blurring lines between “children’s” and “adult” literature. Through this symposium, we seek to enrich understandings of the history of stories as well as evolutions in and of literature. Opening Address: “Pedophobia: Babes in the Wood, Unwanted Orphans and Other Cases of Child Hating in Children’s Literature” by Dr. Eric Tribunella from the University of Southern Mississippi. Closing Address: “The Textual Evolution(s) of Prince Caspian,” by Dr. Lance Weldy from Francis Marion University. Breakout sessions will include: “Textual Blur: Story Caught Between Childhood,” “Adulthood and the In-Between: Developing Graphic Stories with English Language Learners:” “The Effects of Hypertextual Technology and the Picture Book:” “Intergenerational, Intratextual Narratives and Writerly Metatexts,” and many more…Registration is opening soon.
